Renault Trucks introduces the new DE13 R powertrain

Renault Trucks has introduced the DE13 R, a new 13 litre engine forming part of the 2027 model year powertrain for the T, T High, C and K ranges.

Combined with a new generation of Optidriver gearboxes and predictive driving technologies, the powertrain can reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 4% compared with the previous generation. Actual results will depend on vehicle specification, application and operating conditions. The launch gives long haul, construction and heavy duty operators a new choice when balancing fuel efficiency, performance, vehicle control and driver experience.

Up to 4% lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions

Fuel remains one of the largest operating costs for truck fleets. Operators also face growing pressure to reduce emissions while maintaining vehicle productivity and meeting increasingly demanding delivery schedules. The DE13 R meets these challenges through changes to the engine, transmission and vehicle control systems.

The new engine uses high strength materials, revised fuel delivery technology and improved combustion management. It works with the latest Optidriver gearbox, Optivision+ predictive cruise control and Predictive Engine Stop Start. Aerodynamic improvements complete the new powertrain package.

Together, these developments allow the vehicle to use fuel more efficiently while providing the power and control required for demanding applications.

Power and torque for demanding applications

The DE13 R is available with outputs up to 540 hp and maximum torque of 2,800 Nm. The leading toqrue performance is ideal for long haul, construction and heavy duty operations where pulling power and predictable response matter.

Greater control with Optibrake+

A more powerful Optibrake+ engine brake is fitted as standard. Effective engine braking can help drivers manage descents and reduce reliance on the service brakes. The improvement supports vehicle control and makes a more comfortable driving experience.

Faster, smoother gear changes

The new generation Optidriver gearbox introduces updated software and optimised shift strategies. Gear changes can be completed up to 20% faster than with the previous generation, helping to make effective use of the engine’s torque. For drivers, this means smoother driving and a more responsive vehicle. For operators, it delivers consistent performance across different routes and driving conditions.

Predictive technology for the road ahead

Optivision+ uses topographical and road sign information to adjust gear selection, acceleration and vehicle speed according to the route ahead. Predictive Engine Stop Start can automatically switch off the engine during suitable Optiroll freewheeling. Essential vehicle systems remain active and the engine restarts when power is required.  These systems help the vehicle anticipate changing road conditions and reduce fuel use when engine power is not needed.

Compatible with HVO and B100

The DE13 R powertrain is compatible with HVO and B100 renewable fuels. For suitable operations, this provides another option for reducing emissions while retaining flexibility and productivity.

The DE13 R more than an engine change

The DE13 R represents more than a change of engine. It brings together new engine technology, faster transmission control, predictive systems and improved vehicle aerodynamics.
